I'm trying to find a suitable material to use for my snake's enclosure. I don't trust bark, as I've used this before, and believe I may have transferred mites through it. Can I use sand? Or if not, has anyone got any ideas?

Sand is not a suitable substrate. If you are worried about the transfer of mites, empty the bark or aspen substrate into a large plastic garbage can, spray it with mite treatment and stir it around. Do this for several days and it should kill any mites that may be in the substrate.
You could also bake the substrate on a low temp like 350 degrees for a few minutes to kill mites. Just keep an eye on things.
