Step-children are lesser children. They aren't your children so you aren't going to treat them as well(you'd show favoritism toward your own children). From that you get the step-child end. As to the redhead they are considered to be trouble makers or simply undesirable by some. So think about this. They are an undesirable child that you got stuck with. So if you were going to beat them wouldn't you beat them really bad?
