As a Special Ed Attny and mother of an autistic son, I have another prospective (at least for the ADHD and mildly autistic).
Our society has changed over the last 100 years to become only verbal, computer and book oriented. Before that, it was exploration and agricultural. The skills that my son has were very valuable back then-the skills I have- not so much. I couldn't have found my way on the wagon train out west, couldn't tell one tree from another, found water, trapped animals, etc. They are highly visual, can scan the area for predators, follow trails, farm and be out in the wild without a lot of social contact. Maybe these genes were dominant because they were necessary skills.
Now that we have no manual labor jobs and everyone is expected to sit at a desk for 8-10 hours per day they are disabled. If the measurement of ability was finding the trail, food and building a cabin, I know I would be the disabled one.
Just a thought.
