the Scores on the verbal section of a certain graduate school entrance exam had a mean of 153 and a standard deviation of 8.1. Scores on the quantitative section of the exam had a mean of 156 anesthesia deviation of 8.8. Assume the scores are normally distributed. suppose a graduate school requires that applicant score at or above the 80th percentile on both exams. What verbal and quantitative scores are required?

Answer #1

Solution:-

Given that,

1) mean = = 153

standard deviation = = 8.1

Using standard normal table,

P(Z < z) = 80%

= P(Z < z ) = 0.80

= P(Z < 0.8416) = 0.80

z = 0.8416

Using z-score formula,

x = z * +

x = 0.8416 * 8.1 + 153

x = 159.82

Solution:-

Given that,

2) mean = = 156

standard deviation = = 8.8

Using standard normal table,

P(Z < z) = 80%

= P(Z < z ) = 0.80

= P(Z < 0.8416) = 0.80

z = 0.8416

Using z-score formula,

x = z * +

x = 0.8416 * 8.8 + 156

x = 163.41
