Researchers want to determine the effectiveness of heavy doses of vitamin C on colds. A random sample of 407

individuals took heavy doses of vitamin C and a random sample of 411 individuals took placebos. In the group

who took vitamins, 105 of the participants had no colds throughout the study. In the placebo group, 76 of the

participants had no colds throughout the study. At a 5% significance level, test to see if there is good evidence

that the proportion of individuals who have no colds is higher for those taking heavy doses of vitamin C than

those taking a placebo.

The number of colds over a 12-month period for each participant is recorded. The samples were randomly selected, and the populations are approximately normally distributed. Population variances are unknown but assumed to be approximately...

In the 1980’s, a clinical trial was conducted to determine if taking an aspirin daily reduced the incidence of heart attacks. Of 22,071 medical doctors participating in the study, 11,037 were randomly assigned to take aspirin and 11,034 were randomly assigned to the placebo group. Doctors in this group were given a sugar pill disguised to look like aspirin. After six months, the proportion of heart attacks in the two groups was compared. Only 104 doctors who took aspirin had...

A researcher wants to evaluate the pain relief effectiveness of a new medication for chronic pain sufferers. Using a pain scale from 0 to 10 (where 0 = no pain at all, and 10 = the most pain you can imagine), she compares the pain level for a sample of n1 = 4 people who received the new medication, with the pain level for a sample of n2 = 4 people who received a placebo. The data are as follows:...
