QUESTION 42

  1. The last four questions deal with one final word problem.  Notice, there is no standard deviation given! This means you cannot calculate exact z-scores, but you can still answer the questions.

One thing to keep in mind - in the context of z-scores - 'small' and 'large' are always based on distance from mean.

So a number like -1.40 on a number line would be a smaller number than -0.2.

But in the context of z-scores, the person who had a z-score of -1.40 would have a larger negative z-score (further from the mean) than the person with a z-score of -0.2. (This is discussed in the Power Point slides as well.)

    Here is the word problem:

A class takes a test and the mean for the class is 75. The results are normally distributed. Here are individual results for some of the students:

    Andrew: 78

    Daniel: 88

    Ryan: 70

    Caleb: 65

    Jermaine: 92

Which of these students would have the largest positive z-score?

    A.

    Andrew

    B.

    Daniel

    C.

    Ryan

    D.

    Caleb

    E.

    Jermaine

    QUESTION 43

  2. A class takes a test and the mean for the class is 75. The results are normally distributed. Here are individual results for some of the students:

    Andrew: 78

    Daniel: 88

    Ryan: 70

    Caleb: 65

    Jermaine: 92

Which of these students would have the largest negative z-score?

(See question #42 to remember about 'large' and 'small' for negative z-scores.)

    A.

    Andrew

    B.

    Daniel

    C.

    Ryan

    D.

    Caleb

    E.

    Jermaine

    QUESTION 44

  3. A class takes a test and the mean for the class is 75. The results are normally distributed. Here are individual results for some of the students:

    Andrew: 78

    Daniel: 88

    Ryan: 70

    Caleb: 65

    Jermaine: 92

Which of these students would have the smallest positive z-score?

    A.

    Andrew

    B.

    Daniel

    C.

    Ryan

    D.

    Caleb

    E.

    Jermaine

Answer #1

Q.42

mean = 75
Numerator of Z-score for individual given by
Andrew: 78 - 75 = 3

Daniel: 88 - 75 = 13

Ryan: 70 - 75 = -5

Caleb: 65 - 75 = -10

Jermaine: 92 -75 = 17

Jermaine has Lagerst positive numerator of Z-score.
ans : E) Jermaine would have the largest positive z-score.

Q.43. Caleb & Ryan have negative numerator. Caleb has - 10 & Ryan has -5. But as mentioned above even though -5 is greater than -10. But in context of Z-score. Caleb has Lager Z-score than Ryan.
ans. D) Caleb would have the largest negative z-score.

Q.44. Andrew has numerator 3. Which is smaller among all positive numerator.
ans. A) Andrew would have the smallest positive z-score

A section of an Introduction to Psychology class took an exam under a set of unusual circumstances. The class took the exam in the usual classroom, but heavy construction noise was present throughout the exam. For all previous exams using the same format and same questions, student scores were normally distributed with a mean of ?µ = 75.00 and a population standard deviation (sigma) = 10.50. To understand the possible effects of the construction noise, you have been asked to...

Professor Moriarty has never taken a formal statistics course; however, he has heard about the bell-shaped curve and has some knowledge of the Empirical Rule for normal distributions. Professor Moriarty teaches as Honors Quantum Physics class in which he grades on the bell curve. He assigns letter grades to his students' tests by assuming a normal distribution and utilizing the Empirical Rule. The Professor reasons that if IQ and SAT scores follow a normal distribution, then his students' scores must...
