Test the indicated claim about the means of two populations. Assume that the two samples are independent simple random samples selected from normally distributed populations. Do not assume that the population standard deviations are equal. Use the traditional method or P-value method as indicated.

Two types of flares are tested and their burning times (in minutes) are recorded. The summary statistics are given below.

n = 35 n = 40
= 19.4 min   = 15.1 min
s = 1.4 min s = 0.8 min

Use a 0.05 significance level to test the claim that the two samples are from populations with the same mean. Use the traditional method of hypothesis testing.

Edit *** This was all the information given from this particular question. May be why I'm confused as to how to solve it.

Answer #1

Ans.

Hypothesis:-

We find solution using MINITAB:-

Steps:-

  1. Choose Stat -> Basic Statistics -> Two sample t-test
  2. Enter data () in summarized data.
  3. Go to Options and select not equal in Alternative.
  4. Then Click OK.
  5. Then Again OK.

Decision :-

Since, P-value = 0.0000 <

Hence, We reject H0 at

Conclusion:-

There is insufficient eveidence to support the claim that the two samples are from populations with the same mean.
