Discuss whether or not you agree with the following two statements and explain your answer:

i) “Lack of correlation is not equivalent to the lack of dependence between variables.”

ii) “Correlations can sometimes be ‘spurious’, and the existence of correlation does not imply that the variables are related in a causal way"

Answer #1

i) We should agree with this statement. That is "lack of correlation does not implies lack of dependence:

Reason: Correlation and dependency are synonymous term. But Correation measures only  linear dependecy between variables.Weak linear relationship may have other kind of strong assication.Because varibles may associated in other way  such as elliptically.

ii) agree

Explanation: correlation can be sometimes spurious.Spurious correlation apperas a causual relationship between variables but really they are not .

FOR EXAMPLE: Good boxers have better chance to pass examinations.

“Can using artificial sweeteners increase your BMI?” A). Identify the implied dependent and independent variables. B). Does the headline demonstrate a positive or negative correlation between the two? C). Is there a plausible mechanism (confounding factor) through which we could explain why the independent variable has a causal impact on the outcome? D). Now try to think of reasons why this could be a spurious relationship instead and construct alternative explanations.

Determine whether the following statements are true or false. If the statement is false, then explain why the statement is false or rewrite the statement so that it is true. If a scatterplot shows a linear association between two numerical variables, then a correlation coefficient that is close to 1 indicates a strong positive trend and a correlation coefficient that is close to 0 indicates a strong negative trend.

Which of the following statements concerning the linear correlation coefficient are true? I: If the linear correlation coefficient for two variables is zero, then there is no relationship between the variables. II: If the slope of the regression line is negative, then the linear correlation coefficient less than one. III: The value of the linear correlation coefficient always lies between -1 and 1. IV: A linear correlation coefficient of 0.62 suggests a stronger linear relationship than a linear correlation coefficient...

To what extent do you agree with the following statements? a) the best test of the performance of two different regression equations is their respective values of R^2 b) Time-series regressions should be run using as many years of data as possible; more data means more reliable coefficient estimates c) Including additional variables (even if they lack individual significance) does no harm and might raise R d) Equations that perform well in explaining past data are likely to generate accurate...

Indicate whether the following statements are true or false and justify the answer. (I) If f and g are functions defined for all real numbers, and f is an even function, then f o g is also an even function. (II) If a function f, defined for all real numbers, satisfies the the equation f(0) = f(1), then f does not have an inverse function.

Which of the following statements is FALSE? Group of answer choices Older men tend to have lower muscle density. Hence, the correlation between “age” and “muscle density” in older men must be negative. Older children tend to be taller than younger children. Hence, the correlation between “age” and “height” in children must be positive. A researcher finds the correlation between two variables is close to 0, so the two variables must be strongly related. Taller people tend to be heavier...
