A Colonial Colonel wants to know if the average range of the cannon has decreased. Historically, this average has been 1000 feet. From a random sample of 30 cannon fires (i.e., 30 cannon shots), the average distance was 987 feet with a sample standard deviation of 55 feet. Assume α = 0.05 and that the population is normally distributed. Complete a Hypothesis Test - all steps (including defining mu, Null and Alternative Hypotheses; calculate test statistic and p-value; formalize the decision, conclusion, and any interpretations).

Answer #1

H0: = 1000

Ha: < 1000

Test statistics

t = - / S / sqrt(n)

= 987 - 1000 / 55 / sqrt(30)

= -1.29

From T table,

With test statistics -1.29 and df of 29,

p-value = 0.1036

Decision - Since p-value > 0.05 level, we do not have sufficient evidence to reject H0.

Conclusion - We conclude at 0.05 level that we fail to support the claim that average range of the

cannon has decreased.

We have developed a new drug and we wish to test its impact on the amount of sleep. We wish to know whether it will change (i.e., increase or decrease) the amount of sleep in patients.   Suppose for a population of adults, we know the average amount of sleep is 8.57 hours per day and a population standard deviation of 0.96 hours. We sample 50 patients in a clinical trial of the new drug and get an average amount of...

The mean age of the patrons of a particular nightclub has historically been 35 years. The proprietor of the nightclub wishes to find out if there is evidence that the mean age of his patrons has increased. Let μ be the mean age of the patrons of the nightclub. Step 1: State the null and alternative hypotheses. Step 2: A random sample of 41 recent evenings is selected. The average age of the patrons in the sample is 36.4 years...

A certain type of battery produced by Omni Consumer Products has historically had an average lifespan of no more than 87 hours. Omni believes that an improved production process will be able to increase the lifespan of this battery, but it needs to do some testing before it can conclude anything. Researchers gathered a sample of 36 batteries and found the sample mean lifespan was 88.5 hours, with a standard deviation of 9.1 hours Perform a hypothesis test at the...
