In regards to AP Statistics, I know that when you state a null and alternate hypothesis, you would state it as an equation or inequality through Ho and Ha, but how would you write a hypothesis out in words?

Answer #1

In general, Null Hypothesis tells us that there is no statistical significance among the variables present.

E.g: Suppose we are curious to find out the mean height of human beings is 5.4 feet or not

Null Hypothesis: H0: = 5.4

In words,Null hypothesis is : The mean height of human beings = 5.4 feet

Similarly, Alternate Hypothesis,

Ha : 5.4

In words, Alternate Hypothesis is: The mean height of human beings 5.4 feet.

The wording will be based on the problem that we are dealing with and the variable that is under our consideration.

When we conduct a hypothesis test, there are two ways to make a mistake. The null hypothesis might be correct, and we end up rejecting it. This is called a Type I error. On the other hand, the null hypothesis might be false, and we fail to reject it. This is called a Type II error. Either type of error can be costly, though not necessarily equally costly.
