Colleges use SAT scores to predict how students will perform at the college level. Suppose the entering freshmen at a certain college have mean SAT Scores of 1200, with a standard deviation of 113. In the first semester these students attained a mean GPA of 2.57, with a standard deviation of 0.46. A scatterplot showed the association to be reasonably linear, and the correlation between SAT score and GPA was 0.39.

a) Write the equation of the regression line.

b) Explain what the y-intercept of the regression line indicates.

c) Interpret the slope of the regression line.

d) Predict the GPA of a freshman who scored a combined 1400.

e) Based upon these statistics, how effective do you think SAT scores would be in predicting academic success during the first semester of the freshman year at this college? Explain.

f) As a student, would you rather have a positive or a negative residual in this context? Explain.

Employers, the military, and colleges use aptitude tests to predict how well someone might perform. Recently, critics have said that everyone is more or less the same above a certain level—there isn’t much difference in performance. Now, in the current issue of Psychological Science, the authors of a new study found that this isn’t true. Instead, the higher your score, the better you perform later. The investigation considered four large studies of people who have taken aptitude tests: the College...

The College Board finds that the distribution of students' SAT scores depends on the level of education their parents have. Children of parents who did not finish high school have SAT math scores X with mean 441 and standard deviation 109. Scores Y of children of parents with graduate degrees have mean 556 and standard deviation 108. Perhaps we should standardize to a common scale for equity. Find numbers a, b, c, and d such that a + bX and...

SAT scores of students at an Ivy League college are distributed with a standard deviation of 250 points. Two statistics students, Raina and Luke, want to estimate the average SAT score of students at this college as part of a class project. They want their margin of error to be no more than 25 points. (Please explain how to find Z score) (a) Raina wants to use a 90% condence interval. How large a sample should she collect? (b) Luke...

Michigan State's college admission board believes the average SAT scores among honors program students across the country exceeds 1250. A random sample of 16 honors program students is taken and the average SAT score for that sample is found to be 1300. The sample standard deviation of scores was calculated to be 160. Test the Admission Board's claim at the 0.01 level of significance. Find P-value. Explain answer.

A researcher was interested in how students’ Graduate Record Examinations scores (GREQ- Quantitative and GREV-Verbal) predict college students’ graduate school Grade Point Average (GGPA). He collects data from 30 college students. The GRE Quantitative (X1) and GRE Verbal (X2) scores can range from 400-1600 (Note. This is the old GRE score scale). GGPA (Y) can range from 0.00 to 4.00. f. What proportion of variance in graduate grade point average cannot be accounted by the variability in the quantitative GRE...
