A manufacturer of small engines concerned with the issue of noise pollution developed a new engine that would, it was hoped, be quieter than the standard model. 41 of the new models were tested for noise level and with 65 of the standard models. The results are given below with noise measured in decibels.

Sample Sample Size Sample Mean Sample Standard Deviation
Standard Model 65 84 11.6
New model 41 72 9.2

a. Find a 95% confidence interval for the difference in mean decibel levels μse -  μne .

b. Do the population means appear to be different at 5% level of significance?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

a.

Even though population standard deviations are not known, sample size from both the populations is greater than 30 hence we use z test for finding confidence interval.

b.

Hypothesis:

Since 95% confidence interval does not contain value zero, hence we reject null hypothesis at 5% level of significance. And conclude that there is significant difference between in mean decibel levels.

Airliners taking off from City Central Airport produce a mean noise level of 108 dB (decibels), with a standard deviation of 6.7 dB. To encourage airlines to refit their aircraft with quieter engines, any airliners with a noise level above 120 dB must pay a “nuisance fee”. a. What percent of the airliners will be billed a nuisance fee? b. After two years, a sample of 1000 airliners showed that 3 were billed the nuisance fee. Assuming that the program...

A car manufacturer wants to test whether a new prototype engine meets air pollution standards. To seek certification by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for compliance with emission standards, the manufacturer needs to submit convincing data. According to the federal standard, the average CO2 emission rate must be less than 20 parts per million (ppm) by volume. Ten new engines were made for testing purposes, and the carbon dioxide emission level of each was measured. The data (in ppm) were...

1. An inventor has developed a new, energy-efficient lawn mower engine and claims that the engine will run continuously at least 300 minutes on a single gallon of regular gasoline. From his stock of 2000 engines, the inventor selects a simple random sample of 15 engines for testing. The engines run for an average of 305 minutes, with a sample standard deviation of 20 minutes. A manufacturer has developed a new fishing line, which the company claims has a mean breaking strength of 14 kilograms with a standard deviation of 1.7 kilograms. Believing the mean breaking strength is less than what company has claimed, a customer protection agency took a random sample of 20 such fishing lines and found that the mean breaking strength for this sample is 14.5 kilograms. Given the breaking strength of all such lines have a normal distribution, test whether the...

A electronics manufacturer has developed a new type of remote control button that is designed to operate longer before failing to work consistently. A random sample of 19 of the new buttons is selected and each is tested in continuous operation until it fails to work consistently. The resulting lifetimes are found to have a sample mean of x¯x¯ = 1254.2 hours and a sample standard deviation of s = 104.3. Independent tests reveal that the mean lifetime of the...
