A bag contains 3 red marbles, 5 blue marbles, 8 yellow marbles, and 7 green marbles. What is the probability of choosing a yellow or green marble when one marble is drawn?
Solution :
Since, drawing a yellow marble and drawing a green marbls are mutually exclusive events, therefore
P(yellow or green) = P(yellow) + P(green)
P(yellow) = Number of yellow marbles/Total number of marbles
P(yellow) = 8/23
P(green) = Number of green marbles/Total number of marbles
P(green) = 7/23
Hence,
P(yellow or green) = (8/23) + (7/23)
P(yellow or green) = 15/23
P(yellow or green) = 0.6522
Hence, the probability of choosing a yellow or green marble when one marble is drawn is 0.6522.
