we saw that the median of y,...,yn is the prediction with the smallest mean error. Your friend Pratimathinks that instead of minimizing the mean error, it is better to minimize the product of the errors:P(h) =n∏i=1|yi−h|, for an arbitrary data set y1,y2,...,yn, what value(s)h∗minimize P(h)? Discuss the pros and cons of using Pratima’s prediction strategy, and describe scenarios where this gives a good prediction and where this gives a bad prediction, in your opinion.

True or False: Given a regression equation of y ̂= 16 + 2.3x we would expect that an increase in x of 2.0 would lead to an average increase of y of 4.6. True or False Given a sample of data for use in simple linear regression, the values for the slope and the intercept are chosen to minimize the sum of squared errors.

5. This problem illustrates why it is better to use the squared errors rather than the absolute errors to assess a potential regression line. The Least Absolute Errors criterion says that we are looking for the regression line that minimizes the sum of the absolute errors, i.e., minimizes ∑ | ???? − ???? | . Consider the data: x - 0 0 1 1 y - 0 1 0 1 Here are three potential regression lines: (i) y = x...
