What test is used as an alternative to the z test when the population variance is unknown?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The alternative test to z test when population standard variance is unknon is the t test.

There are 3 different t test based on our sample.

1. t test for one sample mean.

2. t test for difference between two sample means.

3.Paired t test.

Based on our problem we select an appropriate test.

And t test is the alternative to z test when population variance is unknon

Assume that the population variance is unknown. We test the hypothesis that Ho: µ=5 against the one-sided alternative H1: µ≠5 at a level of significance of 5% and with a sample size of n=30. We calculate a test statistic = -1.699. The p-value of this hypothesis test is approximately ? %. Write your answer in percent form. In other words, write 5% as 5.0.

A random sample n=30 is obtained from a population with unknown variance. The sample variance s2 = 100 and the sample mean is computed to be 85. Test the hypothesis at α = 0.05 that the population mean equals 80 against the alternative that it is more than 80. The null hypothesis Ho: µ = 80 versus the alternative H1: Ho: µ > 80. Calculate the test statistic from your sample mean. Then calculate the p-value for this test using...
