Suppose the Acme Drug Company develops a new drug, designed to prevent colds. The company states that the drug is more effective for women than for men. We want to collect data to show that the new drug is more effective for men. Let p1=proportion of all men who catch a cold , after taking the new drug p2=proportion of all women who catch a cold, after taking the new drug The null hypothesis states Ho: p1-p2=0 (or p1=p2, equivalently)

1. What is the alternative hypothesis? (pick one and clarify whether this a left tail test, a right tail test or a two-sided test).

A. Ha : p1-p2 > 0

B. Ha: p1-p2 < 0

C. Ha: p1-p2≠0

We choose a random sample of 100 women and 200 men from a population of 100,000 volunteers. At the end of the study, 38% of the women caught a cold; and 51% of the men caught a cold. We calculated the test statistic (z-score) , and we found that it is equal to 2.13 (i.e. z=2.13) .

2. Calculate the p-value for this test (use Table A).

3. Based on the p-value, can we conclude that the drug is more effective for men than for women? (Use a 0.05 level of significance). Explain your answer.

A drug company has developed a new drug designed to prevent colds. They state that the drug is effective for both men and women. In a sample of 150 men, 68 caught a cold. In a sample of 200 women, 60 caught a cold. At á = 0.05, test the claim that there is no difference in the proportion of men and women who caught a cold.

HYPOTHESIS ABOUT DIFFERENCE IN PROPORTIONS Suppose the Acme Drug Company develops a new drug, designed to prevent colds. The company states that the drug is less effective on seniors than on children. To test this claim, they choose a simple random sample of 80 seniors and 70 children. At the end of a whole year, 16 of the seniors caught a cold; and 11 of the children caught a cold. Based on these findings, can we conclude that the drug...

An experiment was conducted to test the effect of a new drug on a viral infection. After the infection was induced in 100 mice, the mice were randomly split into two groups of 50. The first group, the control group, received no treatment for the infection, and the second group received the drug. After a 30-day period, the proportions of survivors, p?1 and p?2, in the two groups were found to be 0.38 and 0.66, respectively. (a) Is there sufficient...

A study was done to investigate what people think is "creepy." Each person in a sample of women and a sample of men were asked to do the following. Imagine a close friend of yours whose judgment you trust. Now imagine that this friend tells you that she or he just met someone for the first time and tells you that the person was creepy. The people in the samples were then asked whether they thought the creepy person was...

The drug AZT was the first drug that seemed effective in delaying the onset of AIDS in people infected with HIV. Evidence for AZT's effectiveness came from a large randomized comparative experiment. The subjects were 13001300 HIV‑positive volunteers who had not yet developed AIDS. The study assigned 435435 of the subjects at random to take 500500 milligrams of AZT each day, and another 435435 to take a placebo. At the end of the study, 3838 of the placebo recipients and...

Are there more children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in states that have larger urban areas over states that are mostly rural? In the state of Pennsylvania, a fairly urban state, there are 245 eight year olds diagnosed with ASD out of 18,440 eight year olds evaluated. In the state of Utah, a fairly rural state, there are 45 eight year olds diagnosed with ASD out of 2,123 eight year olds evaluated ("Autism and developmental," 2008). Is there enough...

Would you favor spending more federal tax money on the arts? Of a random sample of n1 = 210 women, r1 = 56 responded yes. Another random sample of n2 = 187 men showed that r2 = 55 responded yes. Does this information indicate a difference (either way) between the population proportion of women and the population proportion of men who favor spending more federal tax dollars on the arts? Hoping to improve sales, one company decided to introduce more attractive packaging. To test the effec on sales, the manager distributes the new design to supermarket 1, while sending the old design to supermarket 2. The barcode data were recieved after a certain period. The code for this product was 9077 in both supermarkets. Since the cost for the new packaging is more expensive, the manager wants to know the effectiveness of this new design. The collected data for the...
