A shipment of 75 TV sets is received. Five sets are to be chosen at random and tested for defects. In how many ways can five sets be chosen?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

We assume that repititions in the selection is not allowed and the sets are selected one by one.

Then, the first set can be selected in 75 ways. After selecting the first one, there are 74 sets, of which one can be selected in 74 ways so on and finally after selecting the 4th set , there are 71 sets remaining, from which one can be selected in 71 ways.

Thus the 5 sets out of 75 can be selected in 75*74*73*72*71=2071126800 ways.

However, if the 5 sets are selected at a time , the possible number of ways is .

A factory receives a shipment of 1,000 transistors. The supplier knows that 50 out of the 1,000 transistors are defective. The factory will test a sample of 100 out of the 1,000 transistors, and reject the shipment if too many transistors in the sample are defective. First, assume that the 100 transistors in the sample are chosen in sequence, with replacement from the shipment of 1,000 transistors.
