Question

which measure of variability is expressed in the same units of measure as the mean?

which measure of variability is expressed in the same units of measure as the mean?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The standard deviation (which is the square root of the variance) is measured in the same unit of measure as the mean.

In a particular dataset, the standard deviation tells us how much each point in the dataset varies from the mean (average ) of that dataset.

When the values in the dataset are spread more from each other, the standard deviation will be larger and when the dataset is lesser spread ie they are closer to each other, the standard deviation is smaller.

In chapter 3, it was noted that the mean is the most commonly used measure of central tendency. Partly because variance and standard deviation are directly related to the mean, these two values are the most common measures of variability. Explain how variance and standard deviation are related to the mean.

Why do we use standard deviation and not mean to measure the EEG signal? Select one: a. Because the standard deviation is easier to measure. b. Because the standard deviation is less affected by outliers than the mean. c. Because the standard deviation measures variability and brain signals are more variable than other physiological signals. d. Heart rate variability (HRV), the measure of the time interval between heart beats is a method for assessing the effects of stress on an athletes's body. Low HRV can indicate fatigue and over training, while HRV is an indication of good health and a high level of fitness. A one minute test is performed at two different times - 8 am and 8 pm- for a professional athlete over a 7 day period. The following statistics were recorded.   8 am...
