Explain why determining true cause and effect is difficult and why is it important. Discuss how the results of a statistical test can be significant without there being a) an association between the two variales and b) a true cause and effect relationship between two variables.

Answer #1

Let's consider two variables 1.a country's steel production and 2.population of the country in 20 consecutive years.(easily available on internet)

u will find a very good correlation value for the two variables but does that really signifies that there is a cause effect relationship between them..

the reason behind such a high correlation is both are increasing over time..so there is a third variable time..so if we could eliminate the effect of time we will get actual result.

Discussion 1: Searching for Causes This week examines how to use correlation and simple linear regression to test the relationship of two variables. In both of these tests you can use the data points in a scatterplot to draw a line of best fit; the closer to the line the points are the stronger the association between variables. It is important to recognize, however, that even the strongest correlation cannot prove causation. For this Discussion, review this week’s Learning Resources...

What is statistical significance? How do you know if something is statistically significant? (up to 5 points) Two researchers are arguing about statistical findings. One of them believes that any statistically significant result is important, irrespective of the magnitude of the association between the independent variables and dependent variables. The other one contends that statistical significance is meaningless if the association is weak. Who is correct? Explain your answer. Offer a hypothetical or real-world example to illustrate your point. (up...

Select two variables, one independent variable and the other the dependent variable. Explain the cause and effect the relation between the two. How would you construct the Simple Linear Regression (quantity of data and how you will measure the results), and what would you use to validate the equation forecasting an x value. What will be your expectation of the results of this investigation?

Part I Measures of effect size are useful because: A. They can be used with almost any statistical test B. Hypothesis testing only tells us if there is a statistically significant result C. They tell us how large a significant effect might be D. All of the above Part II Broadly speaking, what does a oneway ANOVA tell us? A. It gives us a range of values where the true population mean difference might be found B. It tells us...

Explain why for statistical inference for linear regression and correlation, we perform the inference of the slope of the regression line. Also, why is a null value of 0 considered to be no relationship between the variables? Lastly, how does this relate to 0 being in the confidence interval for the slope of the regression line?
