The director of special events for Sun City believed that the amount of money spent on fireworks displays on the 4th of July was predictive of attendance at the Fall Festival held in October. She gathered the following data to test her suspicion.

4th of July ($000) Fall Festival (000) 4th of July ($000) Fall Festival (000)
9.5 7.2 9.0 9.5
8.5 6.4 9.4 12.6
11.4 11.4 7.5 6.6
9.0 10.2 10.0 10.1
5.5 6.0 6.0 6.1
12.0 11.1 12.9 12.5
8.0 7.5 13.5 11.8
7.5 8.4

Determine the regression equation. (Round your answers to 3 decimal places.)

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The general regression is

y = a + b x

Where y - a dependent variable that is Fall festival

a - intercept

b - slope

x - an independent variable that is 4 th  of July

By using excel the value of a and b can find out.

First, plug the values of x and y that is 4th July and Fall festival in the two columns of excel.

Step 1: Go in Data select Data analysis option

Step 2: Then select Regression and click ok.

Step 3: In input Y range select the values of y variable that is Fall festival.

Step 4: In input X range select the values of x variable that is 4th of July.

Step 5: Select output range and give anyone empty cell address from which the output will display.

Step 6: Click ok to see the regression output.

In the last table of output, there is a coefficient of intercept which is a and the coefficient of 4th of July is b that is a slope.

a = intercept = 1.230

b = slope = 0.851

The regression equation is,

Fall = 1.230 + 0.851 July

Coefficients, SE coefficient, t and P-values are given in the last output table in excel

Predictor Coefficient SE Coefficient t p-value
Constant 1.230 1.531 0.80 0.436
4th of July 0.851 0.160 5.33 0.000

The second output table in excel is the ANOVA table

Source DF SS MS F p-value
Regression 1 55.941 55.941 28.43 0.000
Residual 13 25.575 1.967
Total 14 81.516

The P-value across to the slope is too small, so the relationship is significant.

There is a relationship between attendance at the Fall festival and the fireworks.
