Read the following research cases and identify potential problem(s) in the validation study.
1. A college admission office had correlated the SAT and high school GPA (averaged) with first semester grades for college freshman as the evidence to support the use of SAT and GPA in the admission decision.
2. A group intelligence test (X) was validated by correlating it with the individually administered Stanford Binet scale. Later an educator develops a shortened form (Y) of the Test Y, consisting only vocabulary words. Scores on Tests X and Y are highly positively correlated. The test developer then interprets that this shortened form of the group test should be used to replace the Stanford Binet scale.
1. The correlation is setup by averaging of SAT and high school GPA with first semester grades for college freshman. Since SAT and high school exams are different level exams than the college studies, this study has no significant correlation actually. Thus, this study is not efficient.
2. The shortened form of the group test should not be used to replace the Stanford Binet scale because the sample created is not independent nor randomly selected and this type of observation will result in biases in the study.
