In a survey, people were asked to "randomly pick a whole number between 1 and 20" Here are the responses 3 3 3 4 4 5 7 7 7 8 11 12 13 13 13 13 13 15 15 16 17 17 17 17 17 17 17 18 19 29

Based on the mean and median describe the shape of the data:

create a graph of the data and describe the shape of data in a sentence

Homework Answers

Answer #1

mean = (sum of all data values)/(total number of data values)

setting the given values, we get

= (3 +3 +3+ 4+ 4+ 5 +7 +7 +7 +8 +11 +12 +13 +13 +13 +13 +13 +15 +15 +16 +17 +17 +17 +17 +17 +17 +17 +18 +19+ 29)/30

= 370/30

= 12.33

and

median = (average of two middle values)

= (15th term + 16th term)/2

= (13+13)/2

= 26/2

= 13

Using excel, select the data and click on insert tab, then select Box and whisker plot

we get

we can see that the data is not normally distributed because the box plot is right skewed, i.e. majority of data is present on the left hand side.
