A bakery has five apple pies, three cherry pies and one rhubarb pie. The pies are not labeled and look identical. A pie is selected at random.

(a) What is the probability that it will be apple?

(b) What are the odds in favor of the selected pie being apple?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Total number of pies = 5A + 3C + 1R = 9

(a) Probability = Favorable outcomes / Total Outcomes

Favorable outcomes = choosing any one of the 5 apple pies

Total Outcomes = Choosing any one of the 9 apple pies.

Therefore the required probability = 5 / 9 = 0.5556

(b) Odd in favor of an even = P(event will happen) : P(Even will not happen) = p : (1 - p)

Also P(Event will not happen) = 1 - P(Event will happen)

P(Apple pie is selected) = p = 5 / 9 (from a)

P(Apple pie is not selected) = 1 - 5 / 9 = 4 / 9

Therefore the odds in favor = 5/9 : 4/9 = 5 : 4
