Red hair in humans is recessive, whereas dark hair is dominant, Suppose that a red-haired male and a heterozygous female have a male child who then mates with a heterozygous female.

a) What is the probability that the grandchild is pure dark-haired?

b) What is the probability that the grandchild is dark-haired?

c) What is the probability that the grandchild is red-haired?

Answer #1

a)probability that the grandchild is pure dark-haired =P(male child is heterozygous and both parent gives dark trait to grandchild

=(1/2)*(1/2)*(1/2)=1/8

b)

probability that the grandchild is dark-haired =P(male child is heterozygous and at least parent gives dark trait to grandchild)+P(male child is red haired and female parent gives dark trait to grandchild)

=(1/2)*(1-non of them gives dark trait to grandchild)+(1/2)*(1/2)=(1/2)*(1-(1/2)*(1/2))+(1/2)*(1/2) =5/8

c)

probability that the grandchild is red-haired =1-P(dark haired)=1-5/8 =3/8

Part A, In humans, pointed eyebrows are dominant to smooth eyebrows and widow’s peak is dominant to continuous hairline. 3a. In a certain breed of dog long hair is dominant over short hair; the gene involved is autosomal. Another gene, B controls hair colour, which is X-linked, one allele B1 produces gray coloured hair; the other allele B2 produces red coloured hair; and the heterozygous combination B1B2 produces brindle coloured hair (a mix with patches of both gray and red coloured hairs). If a red male homozygous for long hair is mated with a brindle short-haired female, what kind...

The HAIR gene (abbreviated as H) controls hair color with the dominant phenotype being dark brown hair and the recessive phenotype being blonde hair. The WIDOW gene (abbreviated as W) controls the presence of a ‘widows peak’ in the hairline (having a point at the center of the hairline). Having a widows peak is dominant and not having a widows peak is recessive. Gene H and Gene W are linked genes. Two individuals with the genotypes indicated below mate (note:...

Wavy hair in mice is a recessive genetic trait. If mice withwavy hair are mated with straight hair (heterozygous) mice, eachoffspring has probability ½ of having wavy hair. (b) Three or more straight-haired offspring? (c) All the same type (either all wavy or allstraight - haired) offspring?

In a Mendelian cross, a red flowering heterozygous male plant is crossed with a white flowering homozygous female plant. Most of the children of this cross (generation F1) produce red flower. 1) In this crossing by the progeny produced we can conclude that the recessive allele is: a-produce white flower b-produce red flower c-produce pink flower d-the recessive allele cannot be determined 2) phenotype of the female parent plant is: a-produce red flower b-homozygous dominant c-homozygous recessive d-produce white flower...
