A research group conducted an extensive survey of 3029 wage and salaried workers on issues ranging from relationships with their bosses to household chores. The data were gathered through hour-long telephone interviews with a nationally representative sample. In response to the question, "What does success mean to you?" 1634 responded, "Personal satisfaction from doing a good job." Let p be the population proportion of all wage and salaried workers who would respond the same way to the stated question. Find a 90% confidence interval for p. (Round your answers to three decimal places.)

Upper limit: ?

Answer #1

Solution:

Given:

n = sample size = 3029

x = Number of wage and salaried workers responded  "Personal satisfaction from doing a good job." for the question  "What does success mean to you?"

x = 1634

We have to find a 90% confidence interval for p.

Formula:

where

and

Zc is z critical value for c = 90% confidence level.

Find Area = ( 1 + c ) / 2 = ( 1 + 0.90) / 2 = 1.90 / 2 = 0.9500

Look in z table for Area = 0.9500 or its closest area and find corresponding z value.

Area 0.9500 is in between 0.9495 and 0.9505 and both the area are at same distance from 0.9500

Thus we look for both area and find both z values

Thus Area 0.9495 corresponds to 1.64 and 0.9505 corresponds to 1.65

Thus average of both z values is : ( 1.64+1.65) / 2 = 1.645

Thus Zc = 1.645

Thus

Thus

Thus

Lower Limit = 0.525

Upper Limit = 0.554
