Fifteen countries were randomly selected from a list of world countries, and the estimated infant mortality per 1,000 live births rate for a certain year was recorded. The data below is in sequential order. 3.4 3.9 4.6 6.3 8.5 10.2 12.1 14.6 19.0 22.8 33.3 43.8 51.8 65.9 88.4 Find the: smallest value, lower quartile, median, upper quartile. largest value

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Solution

Arranging Observations in the ascending order, We get :
3.4,3.9,4.6,6.3,8.5,10.2,12.1,14.6,19,22.8,33.3,43.8,51.8,65.9,88.4
Smallest value = 3.4

largest value = 88.4
Here, n=15

lower quartile =(n+14)th value of the observation

=(1 6/4)th value of the observation

=4th value of the observation

=6.

lower quartile = 6

Median = value of (n+1 /2)th observation

= value of (15+1 /2)th observation

= value of 8th observation

=14.6

Median =14.6

upper quartile =(3n+14)th value of the observation

=(3(1 6 )/4)th value of the observation

=12th value of the observation

=43.8

upper quartile = 43.8
