Mike wants to see if he can predict college GPA using high school SAT scores. He should use a:

correlation, t- test, ANOVA, regression? Could you solve and explain why he used, which test? Thank you!

Answer #1

Sol:

It cannot be correlation we are not testing relationship

It cannot be t test we are not doing hypothesis test for difference in means

here we want to predict GPA using high school SAT scores

for predicting dependent variable based on independent variable use regression analysis

GPA=a*SAT +b

where a is slope

b is y intercept

if we have data we can get the regression equation and based on SAT scores we can predict GPA using regression equation.

But if its a hypothesis test to check whether the regression equation is significant or not use F test or ANOVA.

ANOVA

Colleges use SAT scores to predict how students will perform at the college level. Suppose the entering freshmen at a certain college have mean SAT Scores of 1200, with a standard deviation of 113. In the first semester these students attained a mean GPA of 2.57, with a standard deviation of 0.46. A New York Times article reported that average SAT Math scores for the high school class of 2007 dropped 3 points compared with scores in 2006. Officials of the College Board, the nonprofit organization that administers the SAT, suggested that increased numbers of students taking the SAT had contributed to the decline in scores. "The larger the population you get that takes the exam, it obviously knocks down the scores," said Gaston Caperton, the president of the College Board. Is...
