Using the data set below, please calculate the:
3, 7, 8, 12, 14, 21, 15, 18, 14

1- The median
2- The mean
3- The sample standard deviation
4- Calculate outliers (if there is any)
5- Construct a boxplot for given data set

Homework Answers

Answer #1

1 The median is the middle value hence for the data set the median will be

14.

2. mean is calculated as

3. Sample standard deviation as

S= 5.64.

4.The five point summart for the data as

3, 7, 8, 12, 14, 14, 15, 18, 21

Minimum= 3

Q1= 10

Q2= 14,

Q3= 16.5

Maximum=21

IQR = Q3- Q1

=16.5-10

=6.5

Now, The fence for outliers is

Lower fence

= Q1- 1.5*IQR

=10-1.5*6.5

=0.25

Upper fence,

Q3+1.5*IQR

=16.5+1.5* 6.5

26.25

Now since all values are well within the fence hence there is no outliers.

5. Box plot
