A study is conducted to test a new drug claimed to reduce diastolic blood pressure in adults with a history of coronary heart disease. What is the most efficient study to test whether the drug reduces diastolic blood pressure? Justify your answer.

Answer #1

The most efficient study design to conduct a study to test a new drug claimed to reduce diastolic blood pressure in adults whom already have a history of coronary heart disease is a Randomized Controlled Trial ( RCT ) .

In cases of pharmaceutical trials , the participants are split into either a control group or experimental group so that a comparison can be made . Due to it being unethical to withhold medication from patients with known diseases, instead of a placebo the control group would be given a drug already on the market making it an active - control trial.

PART II.   A study is conducted comparing a new drug to an existing drug on treating hypertension among younger and older adults. DRUG (new v. existing) and AGE CATEGORY (<65 v. 65+) are used as independent variables.  Diastolic blood pressure is the dependent variable. Suppose the researchers reported the following: Following treatment, average diastolic blood pressure was 84 (±5) mmHg for the <65 year old age group who received the new drug and 90 (±4) mmHg for <65 year old age group...

Protein and Diastolic Blood Pressure A study was conducted with vegetarians to see whether the number of grams of protein each ate per day was related to diastolic blood pressure. The data are given here. If there is a significant relationship, predict the diastolic pressure of a vegetarian who consumes 8 grams of protein per day. (This information will be used for Exercises 10 and 12.) Grams x 4 6.5 5 5.5 8 10 9 8.2 10.5 Pressure y 73...

A study was conducted to investigate the effect of a new drug in reducing systolic blood pressure in women. The sample average systolic blood pressure of 36 women who took the new drug was shown to be 24 mmHg with a standard deviation of 6 mmHG. The sample systolic blood pressure of 40 women who took the standard drug was measured to be 36 mmHG with a standard deviation of 4 mmHG. The claim is that the new drug will...

A pharmaceutical company claims that its new drug reduces systolic blood pressure. The systolic blood pressure (in millimeters of mercury) for nine patients before taking the new drug and 22 hours after taking the drug are shown in the table below. Is there enough evidence to support the company's claim? Let d=(blood pressure before taking new drug)−(blood pressure after taking new drug)d=(blood pressure before taking new drug)−(blood pressure after taking new drug).
