A survey of 13 patients was conducted to determine the length of
stay in a hospital following surgery (in days) with the following
results
1 4 6 10 2 14 5 24 1 8 3 1 9
a. compute the mean for these data
b. compute the median, range, mode, Q1, Q3, and IQR from these
data
First arrange the given 13 values in ascending order:
1, 1, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 14, 24
a) mean = (1+1+1+2+3+4+5+6+8+9+10+14+24) / 13
mean = 88/13 = 6.7692
Mean = 6.7692
b) median is middle value of given data set that is 7th value which is 5
median = 5
range = max value - min value = 24 - 1 = 23
range = 23
since 1 is occur more than other values mode is,
mode = 1
1st quartile is a median of lower half of the median of original data and 3rd quartile is median of upper half of the median.
Therefore, Q1 = ( 1 + 2) / 2 = 3/2 = 1.5
Q3 = ( 9 + 10) / 2 = 19/2 = 9.5
IQR = Q3 - Q1 = 9.5 - 1.5 = 8
