Can you please explain what the "thinning" process of the nonhomogenous Poisson Process is.

If given realizations of a random variable from (0,1), how can you use them for the "thinning" process?

Answer #1

Here I would like to explain thinning process,

If the thinning operation is statistically independent, then the resulting point process formed from the retained points is also a poisson point process, regardless if it is spatially independent or dependent thinning. The resulting intensity of this new poisson point process has a simple expression.

simulating this thinning operation is rather straightforward. given a realization of a point process, for each point a uniform random variable on the interval simply generate or simulate, and if this random variable is less than , remove the point.

Consider a customer arrival process that is a Poisson process. To find the probabilities described below, which of the following random variable selections (as Poisson, Exponential or k-Erlang) is correct? to find the probability that the time between the 2nd and 3rd customer arrivals is 5 minutes, use a k-Erlang random variable with k>1 to find the probability that 10 customers arrive during a 30-minute period, use a k-Erlang random variable to find the probability that the total time elapsed...

Traffic on Rosedale Road in Princeton, NJ, follows a Poisson process with rate 6 cars per minute. A deer runs out of the woods and tries to cross the road. It takes the deer a random time (independent of everything else), uniformly distributed between 2 and 5 seconds, to cross the road. If there is a car passing while the deer is on the road, it will hit the deer with portability 2/3 (independent of everything else). Find the probability...
