Suppose that, in a given population, the probability of success for a given drug is 0.7 for men and 0.5 for women (the researchers cannot be aware of this). In a study to determine the probability of success, 7 men and 14 women were assigned to receive the drug (no blocking was performed; all were lumped in to the treatment group). What is the bias in this study for each biological sex? (This may be a positive or a negative number).

The formula for bias is

Bias= expected value - True value.

null assumption(hypothesis) they would have assumed that there is no difference between probability of success for men and women will be 0.5 for both men and women

So the expected value can be found out as

Expected value = 7*0.5 + 14*0.5 = 10.5

and the true value can be found out by using the true probability of success given

True value= 7*0.7 + 14*0.5 = 11.9

Bias=expected value - True value= 10.5 - 11.9 = -1. 4

For male it is, bias= 7*0.5 - 7*0.7 = -1. 4

For female it is, bias = 14*0.5 - 14*0.5=0

) Clinical trials of some allergy drug included a group given placebos and the actual drug. Safely assume that a preliminary phase trial is to be conducted with 12 subjects, 6 men and 6 women. If 6 of the 12 people are randomly selected for the treatment group, find the probability of getting 6 people that are the same gender. Would there be an issue with having people in one group that are all the same gender? 1/Basic computing programming...

Choose one of the following that could have biased the results: selection bias (direction: positive or negative?), confounding (direction: positive or negative?), information bias (direction: positive or negative?), and random error. 1. Their study of 12 children in Michigan, however, failed to show a statistically significant association between exercise habits and obesity (OR = 1.9, p = 0.11). 2. In a case-control...

5. In medical tests the prevalence of a disease in a given population is the percentage of the population that has the disease. For a population with a known prevalence, the positive predictive value (PPV) of a test is the probability that a person in the population that tests positive actually has the disease. The negative predictive value (NPV) of a test is the probability that a person in the population who tests negative, in fact, does not have the...

(Case evaluation, Questions 26-39)             In a study, the researchers were interested in seeing whether if Ariana Grande’s music can be sexually stimulating to men. The researchers decided to include male students from Hunter College, age ranging from 18-20, without pre-diagnosed sexual dysfunctions. Out of the possible N=10,538 students who meet the criteria for participation, 200 men were randomly selected by computer to participate. After having the participants sign the informed consent, the researchers randomly assigned these subjects into 4...
