on a statistic exam , you have a score of 73, if the mean of the exam is 65 would you prefer the standard deviation to be 8 0r 16?

Answer #1

Since my score is higher than the mean, I would want the children to have scores in a wider band , that is 65-16 to 65+16 ,that is 49 to 81.

This is so because my marks are 73, so I will want more and more students to have marks lower than me, so that my comparative performance is better. So many of the students will lie between 49 and 72. Although there will be some students above me too that is 73 to 81 score. But they will be less in number. Hence higher standard deviation is preferred that is 16

Moment Generating Functions A student's score on a Psychology exam has a normal distribution with mean 65 and standard deviation 10. The same student's score on a Chemistry exam has a normal distribution with mean 60 and standard deviation 15. The two scores are independent of each other. What is the probability that the student's mean score in the two courses is over 80? Before solving, show that the mgf here is an mgf of a Normal distribution. (Biggest confusion)
