Classify the following as either a discrete random variable or a continuous random variable.

The amount of time six randomly selected volleyball players play during a game.

Is it: Discrete or Continuous

Homework Answers

Answer #1

ANSWER
There are two types of random variables

1) discrete random variable - a random variable which take a finite or countable number

e.g. number of sales, number of calls, people in line, shoe size etc.

2) Continuous Random Variable - a random variable that can take any value on continuous scale of real number line.

e.g. length, depth, volume, time, weight

In the given example, time is involved. Therefore, the amount of time six randomly selected volleyball players play during a game is a continuous Random Variable.
