Does news and opinions mix too much? Should they be kept more separate?

Answer #1

Yes, I think they do mix too much. As the line between facts and opinions blurs, it is difficult to get an unbiased and reliable source of information from the media. I believe that opinions should not be considered to be in the same league as facts. However, it is important to differentiate between an expert's view on a subject and the view of laypeople in that subject. News and media outlets have a duty to provide unbiased and accurate information from reliable sources to the people. Opinion pieces, without any evidence to back them up, when circulated in media can sway the view of people who are not familiar with the topic but are swayed by the appeal to emotion made by the writer of the piece.

Hence, keeping the above arguments in mind, I think there should be a well defined degree of seperation between actual news and opinions.

One way MSNBC solicits the opinions of its news consumers is through the organization’s online Speak Out surveys. Typically the polls remain open. In one ongoing Speak Out poll, MSNBC asks whether marijuana should be legalized, decriminalized, or illegal. As of May 10th, 2015, more than 26,000 people had responded to the poll,...

Does a student perform more poorly on a test with too much sleep?   Volunteers were put in a controlled environment, and allowed to sleep 7 hours one night, then were given an IQ test.  Two weeks later, they called back into the lab, and in the same environment, were allowed to sleep for 10 hours, then given a similar IQ test (a test you cannot prepare for, as opposed to a math test, where learning may affect the later test).   A list of...
