1. Researchers did a study to compare how much men and women talk because it is commonly thought that women talk more then men. The study collected data from a simple random sample of women and a simple random sample of men. For each individual in these samples the researchers gave the estimated number of words spoken by her/him in a day. The data is in the accompanying file.

(a) (4 points) Do the data provide good evidence that women talk more than men, on average? State the null and alternative hypotheses relative to this question.

(b) (4 points) Find the t test statistic.

(c) (4 points) What is the P-value for your t?

(d) (4 points) Do the data support the researchers idea?

Answer #1

From the data given problem.. we had first written the null and alternative hypothesis for the given problem after that we found the t-statistic using the formula. From the t-statistic value we had found the p-value for the t-statistic and written whether the given tCRIT is 1.679 and hence cannot reject the null hypothesis.

Researchers did a study to compare how much people in their teens (13–19 years old) and twenties (20–29 years old) talk in a day. It is commonly thought that teenagers talk more than older people. The study collected data from a simple random sample of teenagers and a simple random sample of people in their twenties. For each individual in these samples the researchers gave the estimated number of words spoken in a day. (a) Do the data provide good...

Do Men Talk Less Than Women? The accompanying table gives results from a study of the words spoken in a day by men and women, and the original data are in Data Set 17 in Appendix B (based on “Are Women Really More Talkative Than Men?” by Mehl et al., Science, Vol. 317, No. 5834). Use a 0.10 significance level to test the claim that the mean number of words spoken in a day by men is less than that...

The following Exercise is based on summary statistics rather than raw data. This information is typically all that is presented in published reports. You can calculate inference procedures by hand from the summaries. Use the conservative Option 2 (degrees of freedom the smaller of n1−1 and n2−1 for two-sample t confidence intervals and P-values. You must trust that the authors understood the conditions for inference and verified that they apply. This isn't always true.) Equip male and female students with...

Research question: Amongst all Penn State students, do traditional-age students and adult learners differ in terms of their grade point averages (GPA)? Researchers are going to collect data from 1,000 Penn State students. They will call each student to ask whether they identify as a traditional-age student or as an adult learner. They will also ask each student for their GPA (scale of 0 to 4.0). 9. Describe how researchers could use a convenience sampling method to obtain a sample...
