Male pulse rates and age. Using the pulse rates of males from Data Set "Body Data" after theynare partitoned into the three age brackets of 18-25, 26-40, and 41-80, we get the following SSPS display. Using a 0.05 significance level, test the claim that males from the three age brackets have the same mean pulse rate. What do you conclude?

Answer #1

Output for ANOVA is

Sum of Sq df means sq f Sig
BG. 333.464 2 166.733 1,304 0.275
WG. 19183.77 150 127.892
Total. 19517.23 152

We have three groups here

  1. age group 18-25
  2. age group 26-40
  3. age group 41-80

Let be the pulse rate of ith group

So we want to test

vs

H1: at least one   is significantly different from others.

As we can see from the output the p-value for the test is  0.275 which is greater than the level of significance 0.05

we do not reject H0 at 5% level of significance and conclude that

males from the three age brackets have the same mean pulse rate.

The data (bloodpressure) (first column is ID) gives the systolic blood pressure (SBP), body size (QUET), age and smoking history (SMK=0 if nonsmoker, SMK=1 if smoker) for a hypothetical sample of 32 white males over 40 years old from the town of Angina. In the problem, we will choose SBP as the response. The two variables QUET and SMK will be considered.
