Yes statistics can be used to solve societal problems.Through the statistical tools we can analysis the population properly.

For example there are many data set that are that interpret through statistical software such as python.

NESARC data set contain all the information about number of people smoking there age, there addictive nature.

Thus we can first make descriptive analysis and then use inferential analysis to interpret the whole data.

To prove that this result is right for the whole population or not we use many data analysis tools such chi squared distribution, ANOVA etc.

There are many other data set such as gapminder data, ad health data set which contains mills of observation.

Thus, without statistics these information can not be interpreted and if they can not interpreted they can be solved.

Hence use of statistics is an important steps in solving societal problems.
