Please answer the following question(s). Please show all your working/solutions. Please solve the question according to the hint.

The US Women Soccer Team is arguably the strongest team in the world right now. Suppose the rest of the world teams up and decides to challenge the US Women Soccer Team in a best-of-5 tournament: the first team to win 3 games wins the tournament. Further, suppose that each game is independent and that the probability that the US team wins any given game is 0.60.

(a) What is the probability that the US team wins the tournament?

Hint: Perhaps it is best to first answer (b) and then (a).

(b) Does it matter that the teams stop playing as soon as one wins 3 games or would the answer to (a) be the same if the teams are allowed to play all 5 games?

Markov Chains: In baseball, basketball, tennis, and various other sports, the winner of a tournament is determined by a best of five or best of seven rule; that is, whichever team can win three or, respectively, four games first is the winner of the series. Such tournaments are presumed to be more fair than a single elimination game in determining the better team, since the outcome of any single game has a large element of chance. Suppose that two teams,...
