A trainer wishes to find out if there is a relationship between the number of miles walked per week and the weight of a person. The data for the sample are shown: Miles Walked, x: 15 20 3 12 17 8 Weight (lbs.), y: 147 106 210 160 122 165

a) Compute the value of the correlation coefficient.

b) Find the equation of the regression line.

c) Find y’ (the weight) when x = 11. (Someone walks 11 miles).

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Solution:

Here we solve this problem using the minitab statistical software as below

a) correlation of x and y = r = -0.976

where x : miles and y : Weight

using the correlation we say that there is strong negative correlation between the miles and weight

b)

now

Regression Equation for the given data is

y = 223.11 - 5.716 x

c)

using the regression equation put x = 11 in the given regression equation as below

y = 223.11 - 5.716 x

now put x= 11

therefore

y = 223.11 - ( 5.716 * 11)

therfore

y = 160.234

hence

y’ (the weight) when x = 11 is equal to 160.234
