It is the unit of randomisation and of statistical analysis when comparing groups.The observational units are what you take measurements on. In many experiments they are the same as the experimental units.

An observation unit, sometimes also called statistical unit, is the entity on which information is received and statistics are compiled in the process of collecting statistical data.
