  1. You are presented with the following ANOVA results: F crit(0.05, 3, 8) = 4.07.
    1. How many individual “group” means are being compared? Show your work.
    1. How many total observations are included in this ANOVA test? Show your work.
    2. c. Assume your calculated F statistic was 4.10. What would be your response to the null hypotheses? Please explain your answer?

Answer #1

a) Here the degree of freedoms for the F statistic are df1=3, df2=8 .

Now, we know that df1= k-1 and df2=n-k ,where k is the number of levels or groups being compared and n is the no.of observations.

Therefore, k-1 =3 => k =4

b)Total no.of observations =>

n-k =df2 => n -4 = 8 => n=12

c)Here since calculated F(4.10) > F crit (0.5,3,8) ie.4.07 ,we reject Ho and there exists at least one inequality among the group means.Therefore, further pairwise tests would elucidate the differences between the group means taken pairwise.

The One-Way ANOVA applet lets you see how the F statistic and the P-value depend on the variability of the data within groups, the sample size, and the differences among the means. (a) The black dots are at the means of the three groups. Move these up and down until you get a configuration that gives a P-value of about 0.01.
