  1. In order to study the relationship between uranium mining and lung cancer in West Virginia, 3,500 people with incident lung cancer were identified through cancer registries. 4,300 people without lung cancer were selected from the DMV registries. Uranium mining data was collected through mailed questionnaires. Uranium mining was reported by 925 of the people with lung cancer and 955 of those without lung cancer respectively, while the others reported no uranium mining.
    1. What study design was employed? Mention in short answers the key characteristics that make this a _____________study. (2 points)
    2. Calculate and interpret the appropriate measure of association for the uranium mining and lung cancer association. Show your work. (2 points)

Homework Answers

Answer #1

This is experimental study design.

People were divided among two groups( withl ung cancer & without lung cancer) and then questionnaires results are reported separately for both groups.

We can use 'Two Proportion Z-Test' to interpret uranium mining and lung cancer association.

Null hypothesis: There is no association between uranium mining and lung cancer

n1= 3500

n2= 4300

p1 = 925/3500

p2 = 955/4300

overall sample proportion, p = (925+955)/(3500+4300)

= 0.042/0.0097

= 4.33

We need to find out if the z-score falls into the “rejection region.”

The z-score associated with a 5% alpha level / 2 is 1.96

4.33 > 1.96, so we can reject the null hypothesis.

So, people with Uranium mining are more prone to lung cancer.

In order to study the relationship between alcohol intake (high or low) and liver cancer, 2,345 persons with incident liver cancer were identified through cancer registries. 3,246 people without liver cancer, selected from the DMV registries were also included in this study. Alcohol intake data was collected through mailed questionnaires. 825 of the people with liver cancer and 855 of those without liver cancer reported high alcohol intake, while the others reported low alcohol intake. In a study at West Virginia University Hospital, researchers investigated smoking behavior of cancer patients to create a program to help patients stop smoking. They published the results in Smoking Behaviors Among Cancer Survivors (January 2018, Journal of Oncology Practice). In this study, the researchers sent a 22-item survey to 925 cancer patients. They collected demographic information (age, sex, ethnicity, zip code, level of education), clinical and smoking history, and information about quitting smoking. Of the 925 patients who were...

Lung Cancer & Smoking Case Study A causal relationship between cigarette smoking and lung cancer was first suspected in the 1920s on the basis of clinical observations. To test this apparent association, numerous epidemiologic studies were undertaken between 1930 and 1960. Two studies were conducted by Richard Doll and Austin Bradford Hill in Great Britain. The first was a case-control study begun in 1947 comparing the smoking habits of lung cancer patients with the smoking habits of other patients. The...

Part 2: The Cohort Study Data for the cohort study were obtained from the population of all physicians listed in the British Medical Register who resided in England and Wales as of October 1951. Questionnaires were mailed in October 1951 to 59,600 physicians. The questionnaire asked the physicians to classify themselves into one of three categories: 1) current smoker, 2) ex-smoker, or 3) nonsmoker. Smokers and ex-smokers were asked the amount they smoked, their method of smoking, the age they...
