Homework Answers

Answer #1

Part A

Measurement of level of population is ratio. Population data has a true defined zero point which makes it valid for the ratio scale. In the given table, the population data seems to have some outliers therefore, the best central tendency measure for population is median. It will generate a better middle value as compared to mean and mode. For dispersion, standard deviation is a good measure for population because for variance we need to use the mean value which we are not considering as a good measure of central tendency here.

Part B

Economic type is a categorical Variable, therefore, it should be measured in nominal scale. It can be seen that the data is divided into two types of economies namely Industrial and agriculture. The central tendency used for the categorical data is mode. As the data is measured in nominal scale, mean and median cannot be used. For qualitative data there is no measure for dispersio or variability.

Part C

Income level is a qualitative data and should be measured in ordinal scale as the countries can be ranked according to the income level of country. The best central tendency for ordinal measured data is also mode. For the qualitative data, there is no measure of dispersion or variability.
