Assume that there is a 0.15 probability that a basketball playoff series will last four games, a 0.30 probability that it will last five games, a 0.25 probability that it will last six games, and a 0.30 probability that it will last seven games. Is it unusual for a team to win a series in 7 games?

ANSWER:-------------

Let 'u' be number of games and f(u) is corresponding probability

Hence for u =4; f(4)=0.15

for u=5; f(5)=0.3

for u=6 ;f(6)=0.25

for u=7 ;f(7)=0.3

Hence mean of u==E(u)=uf(u)=4*0.15+5*0.3+6*0.25+7*0.3=5.7

and E(u2)=42*0.15+52*0.3+62*0.25+72*0.3=33.6

also =E(u2)-(E(u))2=33.6-(5.7)2 =1.11

hence =(1.1)0.5=1.053565

from here confidence interval μ±2σ=(5.7±2.107131)=(3.59 ; 7.81)

as winning 7 game falls in our confidence interval , it is not unusual to win 7 games.

Based on past results found in the Information Please Almanac, there is a 0.1919 probability that a baseball World Series contest will last four games, a 0.2121 probability that it will last five games, a 0.2222 probability that it will last six games, and a 0.3737 probability that it will last seven games. In the baseball World Series, two teams play games until one team has won four games; thus the total length of the series must be between 4 and 7 games. What is the probability of having a World Series with a length of 4 games under the assumption that the games are independent events with each team equally likely to win?

Baseball's World Series is a maximum of seven games, with the winner being the first team to win four games. Assume that the Atlanta Braves and the Minnesota Twins are playing in the World Series and that the first two games are to be played in Atlanta, the next three games at the Twins' ballpark, and the last two games, if necessary, back in Atlanta. Taking into account the projected starting pitchers for each game and the home field advantage,...

The World Series in baseball is won by the first team to win 4 games in a series of 7. Clearly it cannot go longer than 7 games. Assume the two teams are evenly matched. What is the chance that it wins the series?

Markov Chains: In baseball, basketball, tennis, and various other sports, the winner of a tournament is determined by a best of five or best of seven rule; that is, whichever team can win three or, respectively, four games first is the winner of the series. Such tournaments are presumed to be more fair than a single elimination game in determining the better team, since the outcome of any single game has a large element of chance. Suppose that two teams,...
