According to the mission of the National Institute of Mental Health is to transform the understanding and treatment of mental illnesses through basic and clinical research, paving the way for prevention, recovery and cure.The institute foster the new ideas to fulfill this mission which is further used to evolve the science of brain, behavior and experience. The institute promoted the four objectives:

1. Define the mechanisms of complex disorders.
2. Chart mental illness trajectories.
3. Try to achieve prevention and cures.
4. Strengthen the public health impact of NIMH supported research.   

The Research Domain Criteria Initiative grew out of NIMH strategic plan. It integrates many levels of information for each patient to provide a precise characterization.
