What is your smell ability score?
Researchers studying people’s sense of smell devised a measure of smelling ability (Lundstrom et al. 2006). If you score high on this scale, you can detect smells better than others. Although it was not a goal of the study, we can use the data collected by these researchers to determine whether women and men differ in their ability to detect smells. The fact that the researchers felt it was important to record the gender of the study participants suggests that there may be some reason to think this sense might vary by gender. It is reasonable to assume that the ability to smell (for each gender) is approximately Normal. Further, both samples were random samples. The summary statistics are:
Men x-bar = 10.0694 s = 3.3583 n = 18
Women x-bar = 11.1250 s = 2.7295 n= 18
Use PHANTOMS and perform an hypothesis test to determine if there is a significant difference in ability to smell between men and women. Use a 5% alpha level.
