Suppose you want to know if eating large amounts of turmeric reduces inflammation, where 0 would be no effect, a negative number would be to ‘increase’ inflammation and a positive number would be to ‘decrease’ inflammation. In order to reject the Null Hypothesis, you want to be sure that there is less that a 5% chance that it could be true.

a. Would you formulate this as a one or two sided or two sided test?

b. State the null and alternative hypotheses

c. What is Alpha ?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

(A) It is one sided test because we want to know if eating large amounts of turmeric reduces inflammation, i.e. left tailed hypothesis. So, it is a one sided hypothesis testing.

(B) Null hypothesis Ho: eating large amounts of turmeric not reducing inflammation

Alternate hypothesis Ha:- eating large amounts of turmeric reduces inflammation

(C) It is given in the question that in order to reject the null hypothesis, we want to be sure that there is less than a 5% chance that it could be true

Therefore, it is given that probability of making type I error is 5% and we know that alpha is equal to probability of making type I error

Therefore, alpha = 5% = 5/100 = 0.05
