Probability of error is a useful tool in finding out the efficiency of a communication system.Communication systems play a central role in our lives. Probability theory is used extensively in the design of modern  ​communication system in order to understand the behavior of noise in these systems and take measures to correct the errors.

We have use probability theory in telecommunication system by following reasons.

  1. Nature of noise is random
  2. Nature of information is random
  3. Randomness affects the performance of comm. system
  4. When message signal is transmitted through a channel (wired/wireless) it gets corrupted by noise
  5. To recover the message signal, we use probability theory for estimation.
