A restaurant offers 256 types of nachos. How many ingredients do they need to offer to make this claim? Plain chips are one type.

The answer is 8, but I am not sure how to get to this?

That' easy : Lets check how many combinations do you require if you had :

If you had 1 ingredient, number of varieties would be 2 ( with and without that ingredient )

Similarly, if you had 2 ingredients , number of varieties would be 2^2 ( with and w/0 1st ingredient , and with and w/0 2nd ingredient)

So, to get 256 type of nachos lets say you have to have N ingredients

So, 2^N = 256

So, 2^N = 2^8

N = 8

So, you got to have 8 ingredients got offering 256 types of nachos
